Power to Girls + Camp STEAM

Power to Girls is an organization dedicated to supporting and empowering Black and marginalized girls by providing programs and support for personal development, mentorship, mental health and wellness. They operate programs in the Greater Toronto Area and in Ghana to help girls realize their full potential! Part of their work includes research, and in this study, Power to Girls is working in partnership with Women and Gender Equality Canada.

About the Study

This study aims to assess the educational experiences of Black girls/Femmes within Ontario. Through this study, Power to Girls is working to address and/or remove systemic barriers to improve the educational futures of Black girls and femmes.

Who Can Participate, Benefits, and What’s Involved

Power to Girls is recruiting girls and femmes between ages 12 – 17 that identify as Black to participate in the study. Participation involves completing a 20-30 minute survey, and if interested, a 1.5-2 hour Afrocentric sharing circle. These sessions will be held online over Google Meet with the researcher(s).

Through participating in this research youth can benefit from the following:

  • Gift cards: To show appreciation for their time, participants will receive an Amazon gift card for each session.
  • Acting as agents of change: Participants will get the opportunity to share experiences and/or encounters from their educational journeys.

The data collected will be used to create educational improvements and make recommendations to Ontario’s educational decision-makers, such as the Ministry of Education of Ontario.
